Plain text email

Plain text email is the only way to view and interact with email that makes me not want to sudoku myself.

In emacs, you have the following options:

Gnus: https://www.gnus.org/ Mu4e: https://github.com/emacsmirror/mu4e notmuch: https://notmuchmail.org/

And probably a few other half dozen I forgot.

I know CLI users use the following: mutt: http://www.mutt.org/ & neomutt: https://neomutt.org/ Aerc: https://aerc-mail.org/

And probably a few others I haven't used or heard of.

You can use this in conjunction with mu: https://www.djcbsoftware.nl/code/mu/ and mbsync: https://isync.sourceforge.io/mbsync.html

for indexing and pulling in email from your server. We should also probably do a self-hosting email thread, maybe I'll make that one next.

This is also to test the new email functionality, kek.

not to forget that you can create your own frontend and wrapper around plaintext.

you have infinite choices and full freedom in how you want to view the content.

i think this could be the perfect opportunity to utilize the wiki feature. i will add support for the wiki this weekend.

regarding self-hosting in general, it's usually easier than people think. for example, i love mu, mbsync, and mu4e, but it's so annoying that nobody cares to create proper docs, quickstart guides, or examples to copy and paste.

I think that maybe a starter kit in line with Luke Smiths MuttWizard might be a worthwhile weekend project to get more adoption of mu4e/gnus/notmuch.

I don't fully self host in that I have a provider that I pay to deal with deliverability and spam etc. but nobody should be using >gmail unless we want email to become a silo of like 3 companies.

migadu.com is a very cheap and viable email service to get started with.

http://postfix.org/ is what i'm using right now for the bbs. it took me some time to get going, but after that it was fine. i wanna tinker with it more and write a "definitive" guide that covers a lot of topics.

some months ago i also discovered https://pimalaya.org/, a collection of cli tools and rust libraries for working with email. himalaya, their mail client, is really nice if you wanna stay in the terminal and script things around your inbox. definitely worth a look.

Deci has a great into blog post for this at https://decipaliz.neocities.org/blog/gnus-is-amazing which I would recemend.

It talks about setting up gnus and using emacs as an email client, and
its one of the better tutorials I have seen.

HTML in emails is a crime and something we are burdened by daily.
