what are your experiences with cloud computing out of the closet?

Please reply with your tips and tricks on this topic!

I remember when Sneeed or Josh mentioned that tonybtw is self-hosting his services out of his closet. What started as a joke (at least for me) quickly became the only viable option for self-hosting in general.

Everything started for me when Hetzner introduced its price increase back in March. I was really annoyed because I genuinely love the service they offer to this day. I had to come up with a new strategy for my backups and where to host my VPS. I chose AWS cold storage for my backups and Netcup as my new cloud hosting service. While Netcup was cheaper, its overall service couldn't be compared to Hetzner's.

Yesterday, I wanted to order a new VPS from Netcup, only to find out that it had also increased its prices and/or lowered the performance of its VPSs.

This time, I am going to migrate again, but once and for all. I have an unused mini laptop with an Intel N100, 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB of disk storage. I will also rent a public IPv4 address to keep my services reachable from outside.

I am also very proud that most of the self-hosted services I rely on day to day consume very little CPU and RAM.

I would love to know if you have similar plans and what your solutions are.

My first experience with self hosting was on a OptiPlex 3020 SFF that my old church was getting rid of. It had 8gb of DDR3 RAM, and a 500gb hard drive. Now it runs Proxmox and has 16gb of RAM and 2 500gb SSDs.

The first time I hosted something on a VPS was for my website, and I still only host a small amount of services off-prem (2 websites, eJabberd, Jitsi (for now), Wireguard proxy, backup file storage).

Meanwhile, I have two on-prem machines that run a combined total of around 24 services in various states of use. My only gripe is that I haven't bought a UPS yet to make sure that things stay up.

Closet hosting is king.

I also feel that the prices at most VPS hosts are getting out of hand so I went and bought a Lenovo p360 a few weeks back that I will keep on my desk as part of the infrastructure that runs client sites etc. I already have an old m910q that runs all my self hosted stuff on a netbird connection using a Cloudflare tunnel (will have to get away from this at some point) into the network for all my devices.

The goal over time will be to migrate all client/personal sites to the p360 (running guix - reason for this here:) and then write an opentofu script that will failback to a VPS machine if the node goes offline. When all's said and done, I will have a guix closure that is this "machine" - so it can just be shipped to the VPS. I hope that I won't ever use it (just while moving likely), as I have a UPS that can keep the machine up for around 3 hours in the event of powerloss.
